On Reflection – Part 2

A while back (too far back!) I posted on here about the inclusion of reflections in photographs. My main point was that they add to the ‘value’ of a photograph. Well, this last week gone, I had two opportunities to revisit this theme – in spades. My first foray was into the forest of Llanwonno, about 20 minutes from where I live and I had never visited it! (another blog on that one soon). My second was to Cardiff Bay, an area I have photographed quite a bit before. Llanwonno – this was to search out the reservoir, known as […]

Trying something different…

I have seen a lot of bluebell shots over the last week or so and, to be fair, they have mostly been very good indeed 🙂 You have probably seen them too? Lovely beech woods, covering a carpet of bluebells – Spring is here and look!! It’s beautiful. But the shots are always, understandably, from INSIDE the wood. Last Saturday, one of my clients on the Glamorgan Coast workshop asked me the question (or, more accurately made the statement seeking clarification) – “should I always photograph with the sun behind me?” This took me straight back to the good old days when my Dad always told me to photograph with the sun at my back – not even with the sun to my left or to my right. He later admitted that this was what he had been taught and this was also reinforced by the instructions that accompanied rolls of Kodak film. Do you remember those little diagrams? […]

This is more a cautionary tale than a photo tip/hint as such. But one that has hit me hard on more than one occasion. I spent two days in Devon recently and the light was dull, grey, uninspiring, flat, yuk  – you get the picture. On my way home, and as I travelled along the M5, I happened to glance in my rear view mirror to see what looked like a glorious sunset building up. No sun, just orange and pink drama in the clouds behind me. Unplanned and unanticipated. To quote Richard Fox, a colleague of mine from Dartmoor, “Where […]

Do we see things more clearly in black and white?

For a while now an interesting and thought provoking debate has been aired as to whether a photograph (or an image, if you prefer) looks ‘better’ in its original colours or as a monochrome. I don’t think anyone can ever give a definitive answer to this as, surely, it is down to the taste and opinion of each individual? That said I firmly believe it is worth a try. With the ability given to us to convert our work into monochrome via post processing software it is not a difficult task to execute. It does however, I believe, require thought […]
