Review Time! As promised the Giotto’s Silk Road tripod has now been to Mid Wales, Gower Peninsula and the Glamorgan Heritage Coast. It has been under water, in sand, into mud and after a hose down is absolutely fine. So from a robustness po…int of view so far so good.
My model is the Silk Road YTL8383. Weight is very acceptable (obviously increases with the addition of my ball/socket head) and its ability to go right down to pretty well ground level is very helpful. The selling point (USP) of the tripod is in the clever design of the centre column, enabling the legs to tuck in much tighter. Maybe not a MASSIVE benefit but it DOES take up less space if it has to travel in a suitcase or, indeed, a narrow tripod bag.
On balance would I recommend it, knowing that faint praise could backfire on me? Yes – I use it almost to the exclusion of all else. Also note the inclusion of a 5 year warranty – which could prove very useful indeed, given what we outdoor photographers get up to.
